Butter tarts with a difference
I have not lost the plot… I promise (he says).
I have been in the United Kingdom almost 23 years and feel the need to bring a few little treats to keep the homesick away.
I brought you butter tarts a few months back and ever since selling them I can’t keep up with the demand as they sell out each time I bring them to some of my markets.
Not only does Canada have butter tarts but we also created chewing gum, discovered liquid gold (maple syrup), created instant mashed potatoes and even came up with the most revolting pizza to human kind – the Hawaiian Pizza.
So, I might forgive you if you haven’t tried our famous butter tart as it holds an expanse of flavour and textures – buttery pastry, caramelized crust and a sweet filling.
Early on this week I posted about a new tart; many tried guessing what it was and a few were so close to the mark, but unfortunately no one was spot on.
When Reese's peanut butter came out back in 1928, many must have thought the Hershey Company was crazy trying to mix chocolate with a salted product like peanut butter, but now it is one of their biggest sellers throughout the world.
As a Canadian, breakfast can consist of pancakes, bacon and – to top it off – maple syrup. As that perfect combination hits your palate with the sweet and saltiness, your taste buds become confused, but your belly begs for more and the want for more grows within your blood.
To bring back that breakfast feeling, I have taken our already perfect butter tarts recipe and combined it with bacon. Yes, you did hear me right… I said bacon. I cut the bacon into small pieces and pan fry it until it has that perfect crisp. I place a handful in the shell and then finish it off with our butter tart filling. When they come out of the oven, I top them off with another handful of bacon, making sure every bite is infused together.
As I mentioned above, not one person guessed correctly but I still want one lucky person to try our new Bacon Canadian Butter Tarts. So everyone who gave it a go will be in the draw to have a chance to win.
Ps. Yes, I am Jewish but no, I am not kosher.
